モンステラは大きくなりました。My Monstera has grown big.

　室内で元気のなかったモンステラはベランダに出すと見違えるように大きくなりました。

鉢の土がモンステラにあったのでしょうか。

陽の差し具合が良かったのでしょうか。

モンステラが高く伸びて支柱が立てられなくなりました。

ベランダの手摺に結えてバランスをとっています。

にわか園芸師のわたしは挿し木も株分けができません。

このまま伸びすぎたらどうしようかと嬉しい心配をしています。

 My Monstera, which looked weak indoors, has grown dramatically since I put it on the verandah.

Was the soil in the pot right for the Monstera?

It could be because it was getting just the right amount of sun.

The Monstera has grown so tall that I can no longer set up a support for it.

I've tied it to the balcony railing to keep it balanced.

As a novice gardener, I don't know how to take cuttings or divide them.

I'm happily worried about what will happen if it keeps growing too much.

とらえどころのない味。It has an elusive taste.

　ドラゴンフルーツはとらえどころのない味です。

２つに割って果肉をスプーンですくって食べます。

さっぱりとした甘さで果肉はサクサクしています。

果肉の中で種がプチプチはじけます。

時々無性に食べたくなります。

赤い果肉のドラゴンフルーツしか食べたことがありません。

 Dragon fruit has an elusive taste.
I cut it in half and eat the fruit flesh by scooping it out with a spoon.
It has a refreshingly sweet taste, and its flesh is crunchy.
The seeds pop inside the flesh.
Sometimes I get an uncontrollable craving for it.
I've only ever eaten dragon fruit with red flesh.

天気の移り変わりの速さにはついてゆけません。 It's hard to keep up with how quickly the weather changes.

　出かけようとすると空が暗くなり雨が降り出しました。

暫くすると雨は本降りになりました。

１時間もたたないうちに雨は上がり陽がさんさんと照りました。

この天気の移り変わりの速さにはついてゆけません。

　薬局に行って来月半ばまでの薬を買いました。

近所の小さい子にドーナツを配りました。

ここの役場には毎年出生証明書でお世話になっています。

その役場に小学校にノートと筆記用具を送る相談をしたら役場名義で送ってくれました。

これで今年の贈り物は全て終わりました。

 As I was about to leave, the sky darkened, and it started to rain.

After a while, the rain turned into a downpour.

Less than an hour later, the rain stopped, and the sun shone brightly.

It's hard to keep up with how quickly the weather changes.

 I went to the pharmacy and bought medication that will last until the middle of next month.

I handed out doughnuts to young children in the neighborhood.

I receive birth certificates from the local town hall every year.

I asked the town hall about sending notebooks and writing supplies to the elementary school, and they sent them in the town hall's name.

That completes all the gifts for this year.

裁縫。Sewing.

　母の裁縫箱から道具をかりてボタン付けをしました。

母が私に２、３本針に糸をとおしておいてね　と言った意味がよく分かるようになりました。

針に糸をとおすのは大変です。

きちんと整理された裁縫箱です。

借りたものはきちんと元の位置におさめました。

 I borrowed a needle and thread from my mother's sewing box to sew on a button.
I now understand why my mother asked me to thread two or three needles.
Threading needles is hard work.
This sewing box is neatly organized.
I put everything I borrowed back in its original place.

青い光誘われて。 Attracted by the blue light.

　モスキートキラーの蛍光管を交換しました。

虫の集まりが良くなりました。

虫が高電圧の網に触れるとタンという音がして死んだ虫は下の受け皿に落ちます。

虫の大きさによって感電死するときの音が違います。

大きな虫が網に触れると大きな音がして小さな虫は小さな音がします。

　台所とPCルームでは夜間足元を照らす照明器具になります。

寝室では青い光があると寝ずらいので夜は消しています。

酒をやめてから夜中に目が覚めることはなくなりました。

 I replaced the fluorescent tube in my Mosquito Killer.
It has attracted more insects now.
When an insect touches the high-voltage net, it buzzes, and the dead insect falls into the tray below.
The sound the insect makes when electrocuted varies with its size.
Large insects make a loud noise when they touch the net, and small insects make a soft noise.

 It also doubles as a light fixture, illuminating the kitchen and computer room floors at night.
I find it hard to sleep in the bedroom with the blue light on, so I turn it off at night.
Since I quit drinking, I haven't woken up in the middle of the night.

さしたる年末の感傷もありません。I'm not feeling particularly sentimental about the end of the year.

　日本の気温をネットで見ました。

沖縄の気温が一番高いと思っていました。

小笠原諸島の南鳥島の気温が日本で一番高いんですね。

今住んでいる場所の朝６時頃の気温と一緒です。

　こちらは今雨季です。

雨がよく降るので空が曇り太陽の光が遮断され雨の冷却効果で気温はあまり上がりません。

最高気温は２９、３０℃くらいです。

　暦をみるともう１２月の半ばを過ぎています。

正月も近いなと感じます。

気持ちの上で慌ただしさを感じることはありません。

挨拶の賀状を出さなくなったので特にすることもありません。

することといえばクリスマスの混雑と年末年始の混雑を避けて食料を確保することくらいです。

　餅はホームベーカリーでつきます。

もち米の質が良くなったのでこちらに来たばかりの頃のように灰色がかった餅が出来ることはなくなりました。

　酒をやめているので質の良い時間がたっぷりとあります。

深夜特急や手持ちの小説は２回読み返しました。

この先は著作権の切れた小説をネットで読んでゆきます。

 I saw the temperature in Japan online.
I thought Okinawa had the highest temperature.
Minamitorishima in the Ogasawara Islands holds the record for Japan's highest temperature.
It's the same temperature as where I live now, at around 6 am.

 It's the rainy season here right now.
Because it rains a lot, the sky is cloudy, blocking out the sunlight, and the rain's cooling effect keeps the temperature from rising much.
The highest temperature is around 29-30°C.

 Looking at the calendar, we're already past the middle of December.
New Year's is approaching.
I don't feel rushed emotionally.
I don't send out greeting cards anymore, so there's nothing in particular to do.
All I do is avoid the crowds around Christmas and the New Year and make sure I have food.

 I make rice cakes in my bread maker.
The quality of the sticky rice has improved, so I no longer get the grayish sticky rice cakes I used to get when I first came here.

 

 The only problem is that I have a lot of free time now that I've quit drinking.
I've reread Midnight Express and the novels I have twice.
I'm thinking of reading out-of-copyright novels online.

待たずに清算できた。 I was able to pay without waiting.

　買い物客が多く店内は混雑していました。

バイクをとめるのも大変でした。

そのぐらいひどい混雑でした。

レジにキャッシャーが入っていたので待たずに精算できました。

年末だけじゃなくふだんもレジはフル稼働させてね。

 There were many shoppers, and the store was packed.
It was so crowded that it was difficult to even find a place to park my motorcycle.
It was that crowded.
There were many cashiers at the registers, so I was able to pay without waiting.
Please keep the registers running at full capacity, not just at the end of the year, but all the time.
