雀は警戒して新し皿の餌を食べません。 The sparrows are wary and won’t eat the food in the new dish;

　昨夜の雨で雀の餌を入れる大きな皿が濡れました。

エサ入れを乾いた小ぶりな皿に変えました。

雀は警戒して新し皿の餌を食べません。

餌台の周りに落ちた餌をついばんでいます。

別の群れは庭の芝生で私の目に見えない何かをついばんでいます。

野生の警戒感はすごいですね。

いつになったら餌台の餌をついばむのでしょうか。

Last night’s rain left the large sparrow-feed dish wet.
I replaced it with a smaller, dry dish.
The sparrows are wary and won’t eat the food in the new dish;
Instead, they peck at bits of food that have fallen around the feeder.
Meanwhile, another group is pecking at something invisible to me on the garden lawn.
Their instinctual wariness is truly remarkable.
I wonder when they will finally start eating it from the feeder again.

雀の水浴びの容器を大きくした。 I upgraded the sparrows' water bath to a larger container.

　お腹がいっぱいになって満足した雀は晴れた日に水浴びをしてくれます。

水浴びの時に場所の取り合いを仲間同士でするので水浴びの容器を少し深さのある大きな物に変えました。

　雀は水浴びをするとき体の羽をふくらませるので丸く可愛くなります。

水浴びをする時彼らは興奮状態になるようです。

大きな容器に変わっても水浴びの場所の取り合いをやめません。

場所の取り合いは仲間同士のコミュニケーションなのかもしれません。

　餌を食べに来る時に２０羽くらいの群れと４、５羽の家族らしい群れにわかれました。

私が室内で動くと餌を食べている大きな群れはいっせいに飛び立ちます。

家族らしい群れはベランダの柵にとまりまた下に降りて餌を食べ始めます。

家族らしい群れは大きな群れと一緒に採餌しないようです。

彼らの羽は焦げ茶と黒で模様が一緒なので見分けがつきません。

 Once the sparrows are full and satisfied, they show me by bathing on sunny days.
Since they would scramble for the best spots while bathing, I switched to a larger, slightly deeper container.

 When sparrows bathe, they fluff up their feathers, making them look round and cute.
They seem to get excited when bathing.
Even when I made the container bigger, they continue to scramble for the best bathing spots.

These squabbles might actually be a form of communication among them.

 When they came to feed, they split into a flock of about twenty birds and a smaller group of four or five that appeared to be a family.
Whenever I moved rooms, the large flock feeding would take flight all at once.
The family-like group, however, would perch on the balcony railing before dropping back down to resume feeding.
It seems the family-like group does not forage alongside the larger flock.
Their feathers share the same dark brown and black patterning, making it impossible to tell them apart.

野生の警戒心。 Wild wariness.

　ベランダを掃除しました。

雀が割って食べた穀物の殻がたくさんありました。

ベランダはきれいになりました。

 I cleaned the veranda.
There were many small grain husks left behind by sparrows that had cracked them open to eat.
The balcony is now clean.

　ベランダを掃除したあと丸一日雀は餌を食べに来ませんでした。

彼らが食べた穀物の殻をきれいに掃除したことと餌と水の置き場所がズレたことが原因かもしれません。

ベランダの柵にとまったり近くの木に止まったりしていますがベランダにおりてきません。

　２日目になって一羽が餌の鉢の縁にとまり餌をついばみ始めると左右・正面から雀が次々にあらわれました。

水を飲んだり餌をついばんだりしていましたがそのうちに水浴びをはじめました。

鉢の餌をついばんでいる雀が半分です。

残りの雀はタイルの上をつっつき穀物に寄ってくるアリを食べているようです。

After I cleaned the veranda, the sparrows didn't come to feed all day.
This might have been because I had cleared away the grain husks they had eaten, or because the placement of the food and water had shifted slightly.
Although they would perch on the veranda railing or in nearby trees, they wouldn't come down onto the veranda itself.

On the second day, however, once a single sparrow landed on the rim of the feeding bowl and began to peck at the food, other sparrows appeared one after another from the sides and the front.
They drank water and pecked at the food, and before long, they started bathing.
About half of the sparrows were pecking at the food in the bowl.
The others pecked at the tiles, eating the ants drawn to the grain.

風でカーテンが揺れると雀が怯えて餌にも水浴び用の皿にも近づきません。

　３日ほど様子を見ていました。

雀たちは庭のよく葉の茂った木でジュクジュク鳴いてベランダに近寄りません。

カーテンを外してしばらくすると偵察の雀が餌を食べました。

しばらくすると木から雀が次々にベランダに飛んできました。

　気温が上がると羽を膨らませた雀が水浴びの皿で水浴びを始めました。

胸の羽を水面につけて羽を動かし勢いよく皿の水を弾き飛ばします。

長く水浴びをする雀も入れば、さっと水浴びをして羽繕いを始める雀もいます。

日向で羽を乾かした雀がまた水浴びに飛んできます。

羽を膨らませてまんまるになった雀の顔は可愛いですよ。

 I took down the curtain that was hanging over the balcony doorway.
The wind swaying the curtain frightened the sparrows, and they wouldn't go near the food or the bathing dish.

 I observed them for about three days.
The sparrows were chirping in the leafy trees in the garden, not approaching the balcony.
Shortly after I took down the curtain, a scouting sparrow ate the food.
After a while, other sparrows began flying from the trees onto the balcony one after another.

 As the temperature rose, the sparrows, with their feathers puffed up, began bathing in the bathing dish.
They dipped their chest feathers into the water and vigorously splashed the water out of the dish.
Some sparrows bathed for a long time, while others took a quick dip and began preening.
Sparrows that dried their feathers in the sun flew back in for another bath.
Their faces, round and puffed up with their feathers, are adorable.

　カーテンを洗いました。

汚れているものですね。

土埃の汚れだったので、洗剤で2度洗いました。

パリッとしてきれいになりました。

庭側の出入り口にカーテンをつけました。

海風が吹いても陸風が吹いてもカーテンは揺れます。

そのたびにベランダの雀はぱっと飛び散ります。

雀は庭の葉の茂った枝ぶりの良い枝に姿を隠してジュクジュクと鳴いています。

出入り口についたカーテンに抗議しているようです。

They were quite dirty.
Since the dirt was from dust and dirt, I washed them twice with detergent.
They're crisp and clean now.
I put up curtains at the entrance to the garden.

Each time, the sparrows on the balcony scatter.
The sparrows hide in the well-formed branches of the garden and chirp loudly.
They seem to be protesting against the curtains at the entrance.

土をもとに戻して水をかえました。

水の容器の緑の藻を洗い流すと小鳥たちは警戒して近寄りません。

水の容器の掃除を怠っているわけではありません。

 A lot of sparrows took dust baths yesterday.
They were scattering fine soil out of the container.
I put the soil back and changed the water.
When I rinsed away the green algae from the water container, the small birds became wary and stayed away.
I'm not neglecting to clean the water container.

　雀は砂浴びをしながら首を伸ばしてあたりを窺います。

見やすいように容器を低いアルミ製に変えました。

　雀の倍の大きさのある小鳥が水浴びに来ると、雀は立ち向かい、テリトリーを主張しました。

あっぱれです。

 The sparrow repeatedly stretches its neck to survey its surroundings while taking a dust bath.
I changed the container to a lower aluminum one so Sparrow can see better.

 When a small bird twice the size of a sparrow came to bathe, the sparrow stood up to it and asserted its territory.
That's impressive.

物事を考えるときに因果を含めて考えられるようになりました。

起こっていることを受け入れられるようになりました。

気持ちが落ち着き、暮らしが楽になりました。

　私はもともと群れる事に向いていません。

ここで干渉のない生活を選んだことに満足しています。

I'm happy I chose to live here, free from interference.

　庭のベランダには屋根があるので洗濯物を干しても濡れません。

乾くまで時間がかかります。

 The garden veranda has a roof, so laundry won't get wet when I hang it out.
It just takes a while to dry.

　きのう雀の砂浴びの土をざるでふるって石を出しました。

土に雀の砂浴びの窪みが三つついていました。

私が見ていない時に彼らは砂浴びをしています。

 Yesterday, I sifted through a sieve the soil where the sparrows were taking their sand baths to remove the stones.
There were three indentations in the soil where the sparrows had taken their sand baths.
They take sand baths when I'm not looking.

庭に遊びに来る雀は砂浴びが好きです。 The sparrows that come to play in my garden love to take sand baths.

砂浴び用の植木鉢は雨で濡れないようにテラスの内側に置きました。

　雀は水浴び用に置いたボールの縁にとまって水を飲むだけです。

水浴びをしてくれません。

海の浅瀬で水浴びをしているのでしょうか。

もしそうだとしたら雀が羽を震わせて水しぶきを上げる光景を見てみたいですね。

 The sparrows that come to play in my garden love to take sand baths.
I moved the flowerpot for their sand baths inside the terrace to protect it from the rain.

 I also put out a ball for the sparrows to bathe in.
They only perch on the edge and drink the water.
They don't bathe in it.
Perhaps they bathe in the shallow waters of the sea?
If so, I'd love to see the sight of sparrows shaking their wings and splashing water.

私はその時が来るのを待ちます。 I wait for that moment to arrive.

 

　庭に来る雀が植木鉢の水受けに溜まった水を飲んだ後で水浴びをしました。

雀が盛大に水浴びするのを見たくて植木鉢の水受けの前に水を張った鉢を置きました。

雀は野生なので新しものは警戒して近づいてこないことを忘れていました。

あとどのくらいの時間が経ったら雀の盛大な水浴びが見られるのでしょうか。

　山をおりて歩いていると雀が現れます。

そのあと少し歩くと始発のバス停があらわれます。

山奥のバスの本数は少ないのでバスを待たずに歩いたほうが早い場合もあります。

雀を見ていてそんな事を思い出しました。

 The sparrows that came to the garden drank the water collected in the saucer of a flowerpot, and then took a bath.
I placed a bowl of water in front of the flowerpot's saucer because I wanted to see the sparrows take a big bath, splashing around.
I had forgotten that wild sparrows are wary of new things and won't approach them.
How much longer will it take before I can see the sparrows take a big bath?

 As I walk down the mountain, sparrows appear.
A little further on, I come across the first bus stop.
There are few buses in the mountains, so sometimes it's faster to walk than to wait for the bus.
Watching the sparrows reminded me of that.

　私がパンくずを庭に撒くと雀達はそれをついばんでいました。

最近雀はパンくずをくちばしにくわえてどこかに飛んでゆくようになりました。

どうやら巣に持ち込んで食べているようです。

そのような訳で庭のパンくずは姿を消すのが早くなりました。

　私が室内にいると雀がベランダに入ってくるようになりました。

雀は植木にとまったり植木鉢をのぞき込んだりしています。

雀の動作はかわいいですね。

 When I used to scatter breadcrumbs in the garden, the sparrows would peck at them.

Recently, however, they have started flying away with breadcrumbs in their beaks.

It seems they are taking them back to their nests to eat.

Because of this, the breadcrumbs in the garden are disappearing faster than usual.

 When I'm inside, the sparrows have started coming onto the veranda.

They land on the plants or peer into the flower pots.

They are so cute to watch.

　朝食の残りのパンをちぎって芝の上に撒きました。

こちらの雀は警戒心が強く人がいると寄ってきません。

雀はどこかで人間の行動を見ているようです。

偵察の雀が来た後に時間がたつと雀の群れがやってきます。

今は雀の群れの中に巣立った色のさえない小雀が混じっています。

　私が部屋の中からガラス越しに雀を見ているのは彼らの安全距離のようです。

洗濯物を干しに歩いてゆくと群れは飛び立ちます。

I tore the leftover bread from breakfast and scattered it on the grass.

The sparrows here are very cautious and do not come close when there are people around.

It seems that the sparrows are watching human behavior from somewhere.

After a scout sparrow comes, the flock of sparrows arrives after some time.

Right now, there are some dull-colored fledglings mixed in with the flock of sparrows.

It seems that watching the sparrows from inside my room through the glass is a safe distance.

When I walk out to hang up laundry, the flock takes flight.

朝告げ鳥 Morning bird.

 

　カーテンに白い光が差し始めるころ鶏よりも先になく鳥がいます。

パーラポーンポーンと明るい声でしばらく鳴き続けます。

知らない鳥が鳴き続けている間に鶏がお義理のように鳴きます。

こちらの鶏は昼間の変な時間や夜に鳴くので朝告げ鳥（ときつげどり）ではありません。

パーラポーンポーンと明るい声で鳴く鳥の姿を見たいんですが見たことがありません。

羽根の色も姿かたちも不明です。

　小夜なき鳥のナイチンゲールはとてもきれいな声で鳴くそうです。

鳴き声を聞きたいんですがここに住んでいないのが残念です。

西洋鶯の別名があるので寒冷な気候を好むのでしょうね。

There is a bird that sings before the chickens when the white light begins to shine on the curtains.

It keeps clucking for a while in a bright voice, parlapompom parlapompom.

While the unknown bird continues singing, the chicken crows obligingly.

The nightingale, a bird that sings at night, is said to have a beautiful voice.

I'd love to hear it, but unfortunately, it doesn't live here.

It's also known as the West nightingale and prefers cold climates.
