 I saw this during my morning walk.

These are the moments when I truly realize I am living in a fishing village.
The fish dry out under the intense ultraviolet rays.
Not a single fly is to be seen.
It’s strange.
I wonder why.

　先日の国際小包でたわしが届きました。

鉄製の中華鍋・フライパンを洗うのに使っています。

竹のササラよりたわしのほうが洗いやすく保管も楽です。

　調理につかった鉄製の中華鍋・フライパンをたわしでごしごし擦り汚れを落とします。

鍋に水を入れて沸騰したら湯を捨てます。

鍋が余熱で乾くのを待ちます。

乾いたら棚に戻します。

 I received a *tawashi* (traditional stiff-bristle scrubbing brush) in an international parcel the other day.
I use it to wash my iron woks and frying pans.
Compared to a bamboo work brush (*sasara*), the *tawashi* is easier to use for cleaning and simpler to store.

 I scrub the iron wok or frying pan vigorously with the *tawashi* to remove any dirt or residue.
Then I fill the pan with water, bring it to a boil, and pour out the hot water.
I let the pan dry using its residual heat.
Once dry, I put it back on the shelf.

　子供たちがバスケットボールをして楽しんでいた場所に大きな家が建ちました。

静かで市の中心地まで近いので鄙びた漁村に住む人が多くなりました。

 A large house has been built on the spot where children used to enjoy playing basketball.
Because it is quiet and close to the city center, more people have moved to this rustic fishing village.

　ここを散歩するようになってしばらくは犬に吠えたてられました。

いま犬はこちらを見ようともしません。

僕の匂いはどんな匂いがするんだろう。

 For a while after I started walking here, dogs would bark furiously at me.

Now, they won't even look my way.

I wonder what I smell like.

　私は日本からの国際郵便小包を4日目に受け取りました。

　昨年まで日本発送の小包は手元に届くまで2週間から3週間かかりました。

今年から1週間で受け取れるようになりました。

今回は日本で09/12に発送した小包を09/16に受け取りました。

フィリピンは良い方向へ変わっています。

落語の　ときそば　に　ものは器で食う　というくだりがある。

まさにそのとおりだ。

手と唇で器の感触を感じると感じじないでは味に天地の開きがある。

　昨日、水が出ないのでなんとかしてくれ（勿論丁重にお願いした）　という趣旨を送った水道局と水道の管理会社には丁重な御礼のメールを送った。

　洗濯をしなければシャワーを３回浴びてもこの水量があれば３日はらくに持つ。

貧乏性なので洗濯は控えている。

 My water storage tank is full.
I took a shower and washed my body, feeling completely revitalized in both body and spirit.
I washed the dirty dishes.
I no longer have to eat straight out of pots and pans.
This is excellent for my mental well-being.
There is a passage in the *rakugo* story "Toki Soba" that says, "The vessel makes the meal."
That is absolutely true.
There is a world of difference in taste depending on whether or not you can feel the texture of the vessel against your hands and lips.

 Yesterday, I sent a message to the water bureau and the water management company asking them to do something about the lack of running water (a request I made politely, of course); today, I sent them a polite email of thanks.

 If I don't do laundry, this amount of water will easily last me for three days, even if I take three showers. I have a poverty mentality and get anxious about running out of water, so I'm holding off on doing laundry.

野生の警戒心。 Wild wariness.

　ベランダを掃除しました。

雀が割って食べた穀物の殻がたくさんありました。

ベランダはきれいになりました。

 I cleaned the veranda.
There were many small grain husks left behind by sparrows that had cracked them open to eat.
The balcony is now clean.

　ベランダを掃除したあと丸一日雀は餌を食べに来ませんでした。

彼らが食べた穀物の殻をきれいに掃除したことと餌と水の置き場所がズレたことが原因かもしれません。

ベランダの柵にとまったり近くの木に止まったりしていますがベランダにおりてきません。

　２日目になって一羽が餌の鉢の縁にとまり餌をついばみ始めると左右・正面から雀が次々にあらわれました。

水を飲んだり餌をついばんだりしていましたがそのうちに水浴びをはじめました。

鉢の餌をついばんでいる雀が半分です。

残りの雀はタイルの上をつっつき穀物に寄ってくるアリを食べているようです。

After I cleaned the veranda, the sparrows didn't come to feed all day.
This might have been because I had cleared away the grain husks they had eaten, or because the placement of the food and water had shifted slightly.
Although they would perch on the veranda railing or in nearby trees, they wouldn't come down onto the veranda itself.

On the second day, however, once a single sparrow landed on the rim of the feeding bowl and began to peck at the food, other sparrows appeared one after another from the sides and the front.
They drank water and pecked at the food, and before long, they started bathing.
About half of the sparrows were pecking at the food in the bowl.
The others pecked at the tiles, eating the ants drawn to the grain.
