ブリキとトタン。 tin plate and zinc plate.

　前の住まいは家が密集していた。

そしてトタン屋根の家が圧倒的に多かった。

雨が降り出すと遠くから　タンタンタンタン　と雨がトタン屋根をうつ威勢のいい音が聞こえてきた。

　トタン屋根というがトタンの玩具とは言わない。

同様にブリキの玩具というがブリキの屋根とは言わない。

トタンとブリキは何が同違うのだろうか。

　トタンは鉄材が厚くブリキは薄いようだ。

トタンは亜鉛メッキでブリキは錫がメッキしてあるようだ。

　トタン板の亜鉛メッキは傷がつくと水に鉄より先に亜鉛がイオン化して溶け出すので鉄が錆びにくいようだ。

湿った空気や炭酸ガスで亜鉛メッキの表面に塩基性炭酸亜鉛の薄い皮膜を作る。

それが水、酸素、腐食性物質が金属表面に到達するのを防ぐする働きをする。

なるほど、納得した、トタンを屋根に使うわけが解った。

　錫メッキのブリキ板は薄いので形を加工しやすいようだ。錫は銀白色の金属でやわらかく展性がるので加工に向いているようだ。

そして空気中で安定しており、比較的さびにくい金属のようだ。

また錫は毒性が単体では低いので食器類，アルミ箔に使われているようだ。

なるほど、納得した、玩具にブリキを使うわけが解った。

　物はその用途に合った使い分けがされているんですね。

What is the difference between a zinc plate and a tin plate?

 It seems that zinc is thick steel, and tin is thin.

It seems that the zinc plate is plated with zinc, while the tinplate is plated with tin.

 If the zinc plating on tin sheets is scratched, the zinc ionizes and dissolves in water before the iron, so the iron is less likely to rust.

Moist air and carbon dioxide create a thin film of basic zinc carbonate on the surface of the zinc plating.

This works to prevent water, oxygen, and corrosive substances from reaching the zinc metal surface.

I see, that makes sense, now I understand why zinc is used for roofs.

 Tin sheets are thin, making them easy to shape. Tin is a silvery-white metal that is soft and malleable, making it suitable for processing.

It is also stable in the air and is a metal that is relatively resistant to rust.

Tin also has low toxicity on its own, so it is used for tableware and aluminum foil.

I see, that makes sense, now I understand why tin is used in toys.

So, different things are used according to their purpose.
